4 Cloud Trends Devs Should Watch in 2025

The cloud landscape is constantly evolving, offering new opportunities and challenges for developers.

The cloud landscape is constantly evolving, offering new opportunities and challenges for developers. As we look ahead to 2025, several cloud technologies are poised to have a significant impact on the way developers work.

AIOps, Platform Engineering, Observability, FinOps, and AI Workload Hosting

According to Nitesh Bansal, CEO of R Systems, “As enterprises navigate the complexities of modern cloud environments, the demand for innovative solutions to streamline operations, enhance security, and empower developers is surging.” In 2025 and beyond, cloud technologies that leverage AIOps, Platform Engineering, Observability, FinOps, and AI workload hosting will reshape how organizations achieve resilience and efficiency in the cloud. Additionally, Hybrid Cloud for AI will play a transformative role, offering enhanced security, compliance, cost efficiency, and resource optimization.

The Rise of Hyper-V and the Decline of Azure Stack HCI

Bruce Kornfeld, Chief Product Officer at StorMagic, predicts a significant shift in the hyperconverged infrastructure market. “Post-Broadcom/VMware shakeup, Microsoft’s Hyper-V will gain significant traction over Azure Stack HCI by 2025,” he says. “Azure Stack HCI is a competitive product, but it comes with a high cost due to its required cloud integration and management. Hyper-V allows users to build their infrastructure and lower their total costs.”

The Return of On-Premises Infrastructure

Kornfeld also anticipates a trend towards repatriating workloads from the cloud back to on-premises infrastructures. “Companies are ready to end their cloud love affair,” he explains. “We predict a notable trend towards repatriating workloads from the cloud back to on-premises infrastructures by 2025. This shift will be driven by cloud lock-in challenges and the need for greater control over data and costs, with HCI technologies playing a crucial role in facilitating this transition.”

The Rise of Cloud-Based Platforms

Serhat Can, co-founder & director, product management at JumpCloud, believes that IT teams are overwhelmed with tools and employees are juggling multiple apps and logins. “Single tools introduce a number of issues for admins — headache-inducing integrations, employees going around IT to use unauthorized apps, gaps that cause compliance problems and security risks are just a few. As we head into 2025, I think we’ll see a shift away from point solutions and single tools and the continuation of a shift toward platform plays,” he says. “Budgetary pressure means more critical evaluation of tech stacks, and decision makers are more open now to the argument for centralizing IT management.”

Low-Code/No-Code: A Double-Edged Sword

While low-code/no-code automation offers the potential to streamline development processes, Casey Kindiger, CEO of Grokstream, cautions against overreliance on these tools. “The reality is that low-code automation technology has been pervasive in Enterprise IT departments for more than a decade,” he says. “What’s missing from most enterprise automation strategies is the complex decision-making that occurs BEFORE an IT or business professional chooses to take a particular action.” Kindiger suggests pairing low-code/no-code automation with AI/ML to overcome these limitations and achieve true automation.

As we move into 2025, developers should stay informed about these emerging trends and be prepared to adapt to the changing landscape of cloud technologies. By leveraging the power of AIOps, Platform Engineering, Observability, FinOps, AI workload hosting, and other innovative solutions, developers can help organizations achieve greater efficiency, security, and cost-effectiveness in the cloud.
